" A Nature Inspired City "

Yes ... that sound interesting and a feel good attitude. Making Shah Alam ...

" A Nature Inspired City"

Well actually, yesterday the 4th of May, 2011 I attended this half day seminar organized by MBSA with a theme entitle "Training the Leaders and Creating Partnership in Greening Shah Alam"It is part from a series of program :

Shah Alam
Rivers & Trees
For Life 2011

First of all I would like to congratulate the organizer for the effort.

Its main objectives are to increase awareness of the public, NGO's and Corporate Sector to take care of the environment.

The participants can understand the concept of "CSR" [Corporate Social Responsibility] and therefore realize their responsibility towards tree planting through their "CSR"

Actually, the translation above came from what was written in BM, and at best my understanding from it. Other than the opening remark by the Programme Chairman, Encik Azhar Bin Maluddin, and the official opening by Deputy Mayor, Encik Mohktar Bin Hani representing the Mayor of Shah Alam, there were 4 speakers or presenter.

Due to traffic jam, the 1st speaker were delayed, therefore the 2nd speaker Mr. Krishna Moorthy presented a topic on "House Rules For Volunteers In Shah Alam Greening Programme". Simple, sharing his background, being a retiree, and his involvement in the gree activity, but yet, strong points on volunteerism. And from one of his slides;

VOLUNTEERISM
provides valuable life lessons

It teaches you to give unconditionally
to receive openly
to love freely
to hope eternally

The second presenter Asst. Professor Jeffrey FK Phang, share the topic "Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & The Environment". Although academic, his points and video clips, open up new information and understanding on CSR.

Encik Ahmad Azaruddin Mohd Noor from FRIM (the 3rd speaker)presented a topic "Growing Trees for Life - it begins with proper planting". He shared about urban forestry and most of all the process of Tree Planting from;
  1. Tree Selection
  2. Planting Materials
  3. Site Preparation
  4. Tree Planting Procedures
  5. Planting Hole Preparation
  6. Planting Technique
and one of his best slides;

GROWING TREES FOR LIFE

The Best Time To Plant A Tree Was
Twenty Years Ago

The Next Best Time Is TODAY!

And finally the last presenter is Datuk Shahoran bin Johan Ariffin, a member of Institute of Landscape Architect Malaysia,(ILAM) on "Philosophy Behind Tree Planting".

As it is already late, not able to stay to hear his presentation much. Thank you for the breakfast and coffee break, however missed the lunch (tak ada rezki).

A note of friendly words of advice to the organizer, being a stakeholder of Shah Alam :-
  • Please do start on time (ie why should those who comes early be penalize for being early).
  • Too many speaker/presenter for a half day seminar.
  • Topics and participants vary significantly (CSR and schools children?).
  • Should be a workshop instead, with the Volunteerism and Tree Planting as focus.
  • Please reduce the VVIP highlights, all are stakeholders.
  • What happen to leadership ???

Oh yes, not much promotion on this activity, even my attendance was by chance, probably there are more who would like toattend and do not know about it. Lets work together and really make Shah Alam;

"A Nature Inspired City"
